artist's
statement
World War I changed the face of art. One could no longer
depend on the stability of the world, nor trust the art
that had retained the same forms throughout the centuries.
This art no longer made sense for those whose ground had
turned to quicksand. Collage was born and became a fresh
and vibrant way to comprehend the shattered world.
World War II changed my life, so little wonder that collage
has become my mode of expression as well. The family farm
disappeared, fortunes were buried and scattered. So we
too were scattered around Europe, then America, picking
up pieces of culture and cast off debris along the way.
Collages and assemblages reassemble such pieces, making
order from chaos, from neglect, from the flotsam and jetsam
of life. My work is just that - restructuring, rejoining
parts, private passions, the past, the lost. Rough edges
at times conflict with gentler tones. Never knowing where
the work will find its home, the focus is on the small
and the portable.
I want my work to have a long freight train of memories,
associations and affections. The subject matter, though
usually focused on texture, color, and design, is meant
to be evocative of moods, experiences, and remembrances.
