artist's statement
The main question I ask myself as a painter is: How do I make valid, unique, contemporary figurative paintings? The imagery in my work addresses that question -- or quandary -- in various ways. My work usually involves figures in separate realities; people interact with one another but not necessarily within the same time or space. When working with the illusion of realism I will also use devices like transparency or skewed perspective. In addition, I do not relinquish the surface of a work-- its textures and three dimensional aspects maintain the painting as an object. Consequently, the viewer is asked to deal with certain ironies in the presentation of my paintings -- but never in the sincerity of the work.
