artist's
statement
I paint with a combination of oils and oil crayons,
incorporating paper, fabric, and found objects to enhance
my images. Three-dimensional pieces play a specific role
on my two-dimensional surface. Instead of creating illusions
(of three-dimensionality), I use three-dimensional objects
to enhance the images in my work. I play with these objects
in two ways - sometimes I use the object as it is, while
in other work, I take the object out of its original context
and use it based on its shape and color, regardless of
its perceived purpose. The figure has been in my work
for over 20 years, changing shape and form as time as
passed. The inspiration for this figure comes from the
works of indigenous cultures; I find the materials and
forms (designs) intriguing for their power to inform,
for their beauty, and for their intrinsic meaning to the
maker.
