artist's statement
I moved from functional pottery to images that were contained within the function. The bowls, tea pots and cups I made held feelings as if they had souls. Reflecting on this I saw how these images contained a spirit, unseen, as we humans have. We have the ability to share our spirit and are graced to feel others, if we choose to see them.

My sculptures, made of clay, once held actual spirits, gas, oil, etc. and are now empty, unused, thrown away, discarded and forgotten. They are now brought back, through the tension in the firing process of Raku, and given a new birth. They represent how we as humans move through life, leaving childhood friends, co-workers and family members from our past as if we have forgotten them. They are emptied from us, but still having left a spirit that is imbedded into us. These spirits may be haunting as well as precious, but each one is ours alone to feel.
